Four problems, one house
Indoor air, drinking water, humidity and mold are usually treated as four separate shopping problems. In a real house they are one problem with four symptoms, and they feed each other: humidity that runs high grows mold, mold puts spores into the air, and the dehumidifier that fixes the humidity does nothing about what is in the tap. Each section below covers one of them, and every page tells you the measurement to take before you spend anything.

Start with the measurement, not the machine
Almost every indoor air or water question has a cheap instrument that answers it, and buying that instrument first changes what you end up spending. A hygrometer settles whether a damp basement needs a dehumidifier or a downspout. A water quality report settles whether you need a carbon filter, a softener, or nothing at all. A short-term radon kit settles a question that no amount of air filtration can address. The Testing section exists because that order saves people the most money, and because a result gives you something to check the eventual fix against.
The inverse is the expensive path. A purifier bought for a musty smell runs for years while the water that caused the smell keeps coming in. A whole-house filtration system gets plumbed in to solve a taste problem that a twenty dollar carbon pitcher would have fixed. A dehumidifier sized off a room's square footage stalls because the room sits below the temperature its compressor can work at. Each of those is a real purchase pattern, and each one starts by skipping the measurement.
The four problems feed each other
Relative humidity is the variable underneath most of the rest. Hold it in the range the EPA recommends for indoor spaces and mold has nothing to grow on, dust mite populations stay down, and condensation stops forming on cold surfaces. Let it run high and you get all three, and the mold then puts spores and microbial VOCs into the air you were trying to clean. That is why Humidity and Mold are separate sections that constantly point at each other.
Water connects in a less obvious way. The same building failures that let water into a structure, a cracked foundation, a leaking supply line, a bathroom fan vented into an attic, are the ones that raise humidity and feed mold. And the plumbing that carries drinking water is also what floods a basement when it fails. Treating these as one subject rather than four shopping categories is the reason this site is organised the way it is.
When the answer is a contractor, not a purchase
A meaningful share of what people try to solve with consumer equipment is structural. Bulk water entering a basement after rain, a crawl space open to bare soil, mold across more than roughly ten square feet, a combustion appliance backdrafting, or radon above the EPA's action level are all outside what a plug-in machine can fix. Running equipment against them treats a symptom while the cause continues and, in the radon and combustion cases, leaves a real hazard in place.
Those pages say so plainly, and they say what the contractor should be doing so you can tell whether the quote you were given is reasonable. Telling someone not to buy anything is worth more than the commission we would have made, and it is the part of this site that the equipment sellers cannot copy.
What this site will not do
We do not publish a measurement we did not take, we do not rank equipment we have not matched against a published specification, and we do not pretend a $40 gadget solves a structural water problem.
