Dehumidifier Freezing Up and How to Fix It

Frost builds on the coil when the room is cold, the filter or airflow is blocked, or the humidity setting is too low.

Updated October 21, 2026 Our sourcing rules

A dehumidifier freezes up when its cold coil drops to near freezing. TCL's support page names a cold room, a dirty or clogged filter, blocked airflow, and a humidity setting that is too low as the causes. Frost can also make the compressor cycle without removing any moisture from the room.

The temperature threshold depends on the maker. GE's current support page gives 41 degrees Fahrenheit (F) as the lower limit, while the LG owner's manual for its LD40E and related models gives 65 F (18 degrees Celsius (C)). The minimum for your unit is the figure in its own manual. The other figures on this page come from other models and other makers.

At The Indoor Report, we explain what each statement means for your unit. We own no instruments, and this page reports no readings or tests of our own.

Why a Dehumidifier Freezes and How to Thaw It

Turn the unit off, unplug it, and leave it off until all the ice has melted. TCL's steps give that order, and AppliancePartsPros says the ice may take a few hours to thaw naturally.

Fix the cause before you restart.

None of the sources on this page recommends blowing warm air onto the coil. In a compressor unit, GE's manual describes heat as part of normal operation: dry air passes through the condenser, where it is heated and discharged.

  • Unplug the unit and leave it off until all the ice has melted, with a towel underneath (AppliancePartsPros).
  • Confirm the bucket is seated, and make sure the drain hose is not kinked (TCL).
  • Clean the filter with lukewarm water and let it air dry fully (TCL).
  • Improve airflow by moving the unit away from walls and furniture and clearing any blocked vents (AppliancePartsPros).
  • Move the unit to a warmer room if one is available, and set a moderate humidity level (TCL).
  • Restart the unit only after the coil has defrosted fully (Hunker).
Do not use heat or sharp objects on the ice

TCL says not to use hair dryers, heaters, or sharp objects to remove the ice. AppliancePartsPros says to avoid hair dryers and direct heat because sudden temperature changes can damage parts.

How a Compressor Dehumidifier Keeps Its Coil Cold

A compressor dehumidifier draws moist room air across a refrigerated coil. GE's manual for its APEH70 and APER70 models says moisture condenses on that cold coil and drains to a bucket or hose.

Meaco's blog describes the same principle: the unit creates a cold surface that is colder than the room air. The coil is cold by design, so the practical question is how cold it runs.

Frigidaire's support page says the evaporator operates close to freezing, and that light frost can form under certain normal conditions. It lists two causes of heavy frost: an imbalanced system that lowers coil temperature, and restricted airflow. A coil sensor shuts off the compressor to warm the coil and melt the frost.

Room Temperature Limits Differ by Maker

The published room temperature figures do not match, and each source words its limit differently.

GE's current page says 41 F, while GE's older scanned manual says 65 F. That older text is partly garbled.

The LG owner's manual adds that a table or shelf may help prevent icing from colder air near the floor, such as in a basement. Basement layouts are covered in the basement dehumidifier guide.

Normal Frost Differs from a Freeze-Up That Needs Action

A thin layer of frost during the first run is normal. GE's support page says it clears within 30 to 60 minutes at startup. A third-party copy of a GE manual says frost usually disappears within 60 minutes.

Several makers' units defrost on their own. GE describes Automatic Defrost Control: the compressor cycles off, the fan runs continuously, slightly cooler air may be exhausted, and the compressor restarts automatically. LG's Auto Defrost stops the compressor and waits for the cycle to end. Midea's service manual lists frost on the coil as normal under auto-defrost.

The problem case is frost that outlasts those windows or keeps returning. ENERGY STAR says frost can make the compressor cycle without removing moisture, and in that case it says to turn the unit off and let it defrost. Some ENERGY STAR models have an anti-frost sensor that turns the unit off below a certain air temperature.

GE also says its frost controls turn the unit off before a major freeze-up, but they do not prevent every freeze-up below 41 F. Heavy frost that persists after the filter and error-code checks goes to the installer or Frigidaire.

Filter, Clearance, and Humidity Setting Are the Fixable Causes

Clearance, the filter, and the humidity setting are the three causes on the source lists that you can adjust yourself.

Hunker also says to close windows and doors.

  • Clearance: GE says to allow at least 18 inches of air space on all sides. TCL says to keep several inches of clearance and does not give an exact figure.
  • Filter: TCL says to clean the filter with lukewarm water and let it dry fully. EngineerFix says to clean it about every 250 hours or when the light comes on, rinse it in warm soapy water, and dry it fully. LG's filter light turns on after 350 hours, and after cleaning you reset it by holding the Filter Reset button for 3 seconds.
  • Humidity setting: TCL suggests about 45 to 55 percent. TCL also lists a humidity setting that is too low as a cause of freezing.

Error Codes and When to Contact the Maker

Error codes mean different things on different models. GE's manual uses a P1 code for a sensor reset, while Midea's manual uses P1 for anti-freezing protection. Read the code against the manual for your model.

Frigidaire says that if heavy frost persists after the filter and error-code steps, the next call depends on when the unit was installed. For an installation within 30 days, contact the installer. Otherwise, contact Frigidaire for service.

  • GE P1: unplug the unit for a few seconds, plug it back in, and restart it to reset the sensor. If the code keeps occurring, GE's manual points to its warranty section.
  • LG CH 24: unplug the unit for at least 3 minutes, then review the filter and airflow.
  • LG refrigerant-leak code: LG gives no self-service steps and says repair service is required.
  • LG reset: if a reset does not clear an error, repair service is needed.
  • Midea refrigerant: the fix is to check the tubes for leaks, correct them, and recharge the system. A capillary tube that regulates flow improperly and causes frost is replaced if it is blocked. These are technician repairs.
  • TCL: if icing continues, contact TCL support with the model number, serial number, a description of the problem, and the steps already tried. If you see sparks, smell burning, or hear a loud popping sound, unplug the unit and contact support.

Meaco Recommends a Desiccant Unit for Cold Rooms; ENERGY STAR Says to Choose a Low-Temperature Product

Compressor units have a temperature floor, and the sources on this page point to a desiccant design for rooms below it. Meaco's blog says compressor units below 10 C spend more time defrosting, and that small compressor units below 15 C will not perform well.

A desiccant unit has no compressor and no cold surface. Meaco describes a desiccant wheel that absorbs moisture like a sponge, with an internal heater and fan that regenerate the wheel. According to Meaco, that design keeps consistent performance regardless of the surrounding temperature, and it is recommended below 10 C. Meaco sells both compressor and desiccant units, so its comparison comes from a seller with products in both categories. Desiccant designs are covered in the desiccant dehumidifier guide.

ENERGY STAR advises choosing a product specified for lower temperatures when the space is cooler. The LG owner's manual lists a Low Temperature model, and the LG owner's manual says it continuously cycles up to 42 F.

  • Room above 10 C (converted: 50 F): Meaco says compressor units are suitable in that range.
  • Room between 10 C and 15 C (converted: 50 F to 59 F): Meaco says small compressor units will not perform well in that range. The sources give no figure for larger compressor units there.
  • Room below 10 C (converted: 50 F): Meaco recommends a desiccant unit, and says compressor units spend more time defrosting in that range.

Who This Advice Does Not Fit and What Would Change It

This advice does not fit a unit that keeps freezing after the thaw and fix steps. It also does not fit a unit that shows a refrigerant-leak code, sparks, or a burning smell. Those cases belong to the maker or a technician.

The answer changes if your manual lists a minimum temperature other than 41 F or 65 F, because that figure is the one that applies to your unit. Heavy frost that returns after the filter and clearance steps is a case for the maker.

The sources on this page do not compare running cost between a compressor unit and a desiccant unit, so that comparison is not published in them. Running cost is covered in the running cost guide. Capacity is covered in the dehumidifier size guide, and model choices are covered in the best dehumidifier guide. The sources here give no capacity figure for preventing freezing.

Common questions

Why does my dehumidifier keep freezing up?

Frost forms when the coil runs near freezing. TCL's support page lists a cold room, a dirty or clogged filter, blocked airflow, and a humidity setting that is too low as the causes. The thaw and fix sequence is under Why a Dehumidifier Freezes and How to Thaw It.

How long does frost on a dehumidifier take to clear?

GE's support page says a thin layer of frost at first startup clears within 30 to 60 minutes. A third-party copy of a GE manual says frost usually disappears within 60 minutes.

Can I use a hair dryer to melt the ice?

No. TCL says not to use hair dryers, heaters, or sharp objects to remove the ice. AppliancePartsPros says sudden temperature changes can damage parts, so it advises against hair dryers and direct heat.

What room temperature does a dehumidifier need?

The published figures differ. GE's current support page says 41 F, the LG owner's manual for its LD40E and related models says 65 F (18 C), and TCL says about 65 F. The minimum for your unit is the figure in its own manual.

Does a P1 code mean the same thing on every model?

No. GE's P1 code is reset by unplugging the unit for a few seconds and restarting it. Midea's P1 is anti-freezing protection, which turns off the compressor when the evaporator falls below 1 C for 15 minutes or more, and restarts it after 9 minutes.
